The scientific name of Garcinia Cambogia is Garcinia gummi-gutta and it also commonly named Malabar Tamarind, Garcinia, Brindle Berry, Pot Tamarind, Kokum butter oil tree and Gambooge. It is generally found in Southeast Asia and India i.e. commonly in Southwestern India.

Garcinia Cambogia generally looks like a small pumpkin in the size of guava or tomato with multiple lobes and it is found mostly green but sometimes in red and yellow color.

You must have seen many advertisements and must have heard from many people that garcinia Cambogia works like magic in weight loss. But does it really do?

Benefits and Effects of Garcinia Cambogia in the human body.

Hydroxycitric acid (HCA) an organic acid, which is extracted from the rind of Garcinia Cambogia, is basically used for anti-obesity supplements. Hydroxycitric acid (HCA) stops the enzyme citrate lyase that is used by our body for producing fats (fatty acid), triglycerides and Cholesterol, by inhibiting adenosine triphosphate-citrate lyase which is a catalyst for the reaction to convert citrate to acetyl-coenzyme A.

The level of a brain chemical called serotonin is also elevated by HCA that makes us less hungry and to take less food, thus helping us to fight obesity. HCA also helps to fight obesity by increasing fat oxidation and decreasing de novo lipogenesis.

But a study was done over 135 overweight men and women for 12 weeks by dividing them into two groups where one group was subjected to Hydroxycitric acid (HCA) and another group to placebo. The result showed that both groups had a fat and mass change but there was no significant difference in weight loss achieved by both the groups. 

There are also other studies of Garcinia Cambogia regarding weight loss, some of which showed positive results and some showed no effect but its ideal dosage is still a fact to study.

So it is difficult to say that Garcinia Cambogia has any significant effect on weight loss.

Now let's talk about the adverse effects or side effects of Garcinia Cambogia.

Side Effects of Garcinia Cambogia.

Garcinia Cambogia has evidence of hepatoxicity due to Hydroxycitric acid present in it. A case of a 34-year Spanish man was reported liver disorder due to consumption of Garcinia Cambogia dietary supplements also 23 more cases including death were reported in 2004 and for that HCA supplements were banned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009.

According to a study, it is safe to take Garcinia Cambogia for short periods like 12 weeks or less for most people.

Again in 2017, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned people to stop consuming Garcinia Cambogia dietary supplements because some people suffered severe liver problems after taking that.

It was also observed in a study that after giving an administered dose of Garcinia Cambogia to rats for a long time, caused hepatotoxic effects and even developed non-alcoholic hepatic steatosis due to the accumulation of collagen in the liver because of hyperlipidic diet.

There are also reports of Garcinia Cambogia interacting adversely with insulin, diabetes medicines and psychiatric medicines.

It is also reported bad for pregnant or nursing women.

Other side effects you may get from Garcinia Cambogia:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth
  • Diarrhea or upset stomach

Conclusion

Garcinia Cambogia doesn't have significant or reliable proof of its effect on weight loss.
